Balancing Work and Family: CEOs and Experts Weigh in on Phone Distractions

A recent report by the Pew Research Center reveals that nearly half of teenagers, specifically 46% of those aged 13 to 17, feel their parents are often distracted by their phones during conversations. This finding has ignited a broader discussion about the impact of mobile device use on family relationships, particularly among working parents.

Christian Sutherland-Wong, the CEO of Glassdoor, is one such parent who takes this issue to heart. Working remotely five days a week, he prioritizes being present for his children, limiting work-related activities during off-hours. Sutherland-Wong states, “I’ve done that before [and] the kids pick up on that,” emphasizing the influence of parental engagement on children’s emotional well-being.

According to Robin L. Nabi, a communications professor at the University of California, Santa Barbara, there exists a notable correlation between parents engrossed in their devices and children experiencing stress or emotional detachment. Nabi notes that when parents focus on their phones, their facial expressions become “still”—emotionless and unresponsive. This lack of engagement sends a powerful message to children about their importance in that moment.

Nabi further explains, “Where their eyes are sends a message to their children about what’s important.” With Sutherland-Wong being a father of two young kids, he understands the significance of being attentive during family interactions. In an effort to mitigate distractions, Nabi asserts that ensuring all phones are stored away during crucial family time, such as dinner, can dramatically enhance the quality of those interactions.

Research conducted in 2022 supports Nabi’s claims, indicating that children’s responses are directly tied to parental behavior. “Kids respond to their parents. And no matter what type of content a parent may be viewing on their phone, the outward appearance to the child is a lack of responsiveness,” she adds. This emphasizes the need for conscious efforts by parents to engage fully with their children during family time.

Sutherland-Wong’s approach to work-life balance reflects a growing sentiment among working parents who are striving for healthier family dynamics. After rising through the ranks from vice president of product in 2015 to CEO in 2020, he oversees over 500 employees. His leadership perspective incorporates the significance of being present at home while managing professional responsibilities.
