Matsumoto Castle Gun Corps is delighted to announce that history lovers, martial arts enthusiasts, recreational shooting fans, and all those who love and admire the rich culture of the Japanese samurai, can look to it for life-size reenactments of the ancient heritage and cultural practices of the Matchlock Samurai.
The Japanese association was formed to highlight the rich history of Matchlock Samurai warriors in feudal Japan and possesses an impressive museum of samurai-era weapons. Additionally, Matsumoto Castle Gun Corps maintains a shooting display team that conducts gunnery exercises, to thrill and educate spectators on the amazing heritage of the ancient Japanese warriors.
“Matsumoto Castle Gun Corps formed in 1990 and since then we have been studying Japanese matchlock gunnery. To do this we maintain a collection of matchlock guns that were made in the Edo-era. We regularly practice the way of the gun (Hojutsu) and take part in gunnery exercises both in Matsumoto City, and other places in Japan.”
Before now, a lot of people only associated Samurai warriors with katana, bows, and cavalry. Any mention of guns or bullets usually led to a startled expression on a curious face probably nursing the question “Did the samurai use guns?”
But as Matsumoto Castle has proven time and again with its exhibition, not only did the ancient samurai warriors own guns, but the guns themselves were also a vital tool that changed the way battles were fought in feudal Japan forever.
“There’s more to samurai history than many people realise. Arriving in Japan in 1543, the way of the gun changed the way conflicts were fought during the feudal era.”
Sometimes referred to as a teppo, tanegashima, or hinawaju, these weapons were domestically produced and frequently carried by the famed samurai of Japan. Matsumoto Castle Gun Corps practices authentic battlefield tactics and martial skills, developed by the famed samurai of Japan.
The association has revealed that while it is locked in preparation for the 2022 shooting season, history lovers and all other admirers of Japanese culture can visit its YouTube page to watch recent displays of its gunnery exercises.
