Silixa published more information about XSeepT developed by HydroResearch. XSeepT is a high-precision distributed fibre optic sensing-based seepage Dam Monitoring System that enables continuous awareness of dam conditions, thus elevating dam safety. It is an affordable and dependable dam monitoring system that continuously monitors the whole dam structure.
XSeepT makes use of the highest spatial resolution temperature data available from Silixa’s ULTIMA DTS distributed temperature sensor to identify and compute seepage rates in dam structures. Any change in seepage flow rates may indicate erosion, which is one of the most prevalent reasons for dam collapse.
Seasonal temperature variations inside the dam are caused by the seepage flow. This seasonal temperature change may be recorded with good spatial resolution along an embankment or tailings dam using Silixa’s spectrum of distributed fibre optic sensor technologies and fibre optic cables. The observed data may then be utilised to calculate the seepage flow through the dam automatically using XSeepT (a real-time data assessment system).
As a result, this temperature fluctuation is influenced by seepage flow, seasonal change at the inflow border, and the distance between the boundary and the measurement station. As the seepage flow rises, the temperature within the dam will alter, resulting in an increase in seasonal variance. In general, consistent temperature suggests little fluid seepage, however major seasonal changes may indicate severe seepage.
Silixa has detailed some of XSeepT’s characteristics on their website, one of which being the ability to monitor whole dams in real-time with a high degree of precision. Because the fibre optic cable acts as the sensor, measurements may be gathered throughout the whole length of the cable, providing operators with complete information about the entire dam. Distributed sensing enables the detection of extremely modest, localised variations in seepage flow rates that would go unreported otherwise. It provides temperature measurements with the accuracy of point sensors, but with the undeniable benefit of fibre optics: maximum spatial coverage.
Another advantage of this technology is remote monitoring, as well as the overall cost-effectiveness of the system. Remote dam monitoring is now possible thanks to cloud-based data display. Locally and/or through a cloud-based server, measured and analysed data is made available in a variety of forms. Data visualisations are provided, allowing for remote access and analysis.
Due to the fact that the fibre serves as the sensor, the technology provides an expanded measuring array at a cheap cost. The fibre requires no maintenance or electricity. Additionally, depending on the design and placement of the optical fibre cable, strain and acoustic measurements may be obtained as part of the integrity health checks.
