New York, NY – Artist and current Hunter MFA student Paul Vogeler is pleased to announce the launch of his limited edition Tarot Deck entitled “The Stars Over Me” on Kickstarter. Made from 78 carved 4″ X 6″ linoleum blocks, each card is printed, hand-cut and placed into a handmade box by craftsmen at Unique Visuals. The edition of 300 will be numbered and signed by the artist.
Creator Paul Joseph Vogeler is raising money to cover the costs of printing and shipping through his Kickstarter campaign. Because this is a limited edition, and each set is hand-made and signed, costs are substantially higher than those of a mass-produced deck. Vogeler says that creating a work of art was his goal, but if this project is successful, he would also like to create subsequent editions.
Some of the cards reference the widely recognized Rider-Waite deck and often reduce that original card to a new symbol. Many cards feature a single figure, tool in hand, caught in a moment of inward reflection. Other cards depict eroticism, fetish, and memento mori. Several are based on memories, especially the memories of Paul’s father, who died of an aggressive form of brain cancer known as Glioblastoma.
“The creation of ‘The Stars Over Me’ became both prayer and meditation for me in a time of grief and confusion,” Vogeler explains. “The art expresses the pain of lost love as I watched my father’s inevitable decline and eventual death. The deck expresses a feeling of loss, but not the loss of hope.”
The deck is being launched a year after Vogeler’s father’s death on April 13th, which would have been his birthday.
Even though the world is in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, Vogeler feels that it’s important to keep creating and releasing artwork.
“People are dying; loved ones are being lost. I want this deck to offer some solace, some beauty and resolution amidst the chaos,” he adds.
A portion of this campaign’s proceeds will be donated to The James Cancer Hospital at the Ohio State University. The donation will be made in Vogeler’s father’s name and will go specifically to funding ongoing Brain Cancer Research.
