In light of the recent Russia-Ukraine conflict, many Ukrainian citizens are suffering casualties, losses and are forced to leave the comfort of their homes due to the ongoing invasion.
Patron and his group of compassionate friends decided to find a creative way to help Ukrainians by using Airbnb. His kind Floridian friend, Alexa Godel wanted to share this method in hopes that others will follow due.
Godel avoided management companies and searched for a host in Ukraine’s capital city of Kyiv. She chose to help Serge.
“I booked the stay and then I immediately messaged the host and said, ‘I just want to let you know I’m not going to be coming and staying. I just really wanted to find a way to donate and make an impact. And please keep this money, and if you don’t need it, please give it to somebody who does”, said Alexa Godel.
The Ukrainian host responded with gratitude. Russian forces attacked and he was forced to leave everything he owned behind.
“I can’t even imagine what he’s going through let alone the rest of the Ukrainian people right now but it just felt great to get a response from him and know that I was making a difference,” added Patron.
Airbnb released a statement about the trend: “We are so humbled by the inspiring generosity of our community during this moment of crisis. Airbnb is temporarily waiving guest and host fees on bookings in Ukraine at this time.”
The company also announced the suspension of operations in Russia and Belarus.
