New Report Illuminates Funding Challenges for Women Entrepreneurs in Indonesia

A recent report unveiled at AC Ventures’ headquarters in Jakarta has shed light on the significant barriers faced by women entrepreneurs in Indonesia, particularly in securing funding. The report, a collaboration between AC Ventures, Boston Consulting Group (BCG), and Stellar Women, identifies five major challenges that hinder women’s access to financial resources. It also highlights a staggering funding gap of US$1.7 trillion that affects the growth potential of women-led businesses across the country.

The exclusive launch event brought together prominent female founders, investors, and stakeholders to discuss these critical issues and explore opportunities for fostering a more inclusive entrepreneurial ecosystem. The gathering underscored a collective commitment to addressing the unique challenges women entrepreneurs face in Indonesia.

In its second edition, the report goes deeper into analyzing the funding gaps that impede progress for women entrepreneurs. This edition builds upon the foundational strategies introduced in the first report and aims to provide actionable recommendations. The findings emphasize three essential pillars for progress: mentorship and knowledge-sharing platforms, government support, and inclusive entrepreneurial ecosystems.

AC Ventures, renowned for its commitment to gender diversity, showcases women co-founders in 40% of its portfolio companies. Furthermore, 40% of jobs within these companies are led by women, with half of AC Ventures’ senior leadership roles occupied by female executives. This commitment reflects a broader recognition of the need to empower women entrepreneurs and ensure their voices are heard in the business landscape.

Lenita Tobing, Managing Director & Partner at BCG, highlighted the urgency of breaking down barriers for women entrepreneurs. She stated,

“At BCG, we are deeply committed to breaking down barriers and empowering women to unlock their full potential.”

Samira Shihab, Principal at AC Ventures and Founder of Stellar Women, also stressed the importance of addressing funding challenges. She remarked,

“Gender diversity isn’t just a value. It’s a catalyst for economic and social progress.”

Shihab further emphasized that empowering women is not merely a mission but an imperative for creating a brighter and more equitable future.

The report reveals that many women entrepreneurs encounter obstacles such as limited access to networks, lack of financial literacy, and biases within investment practices. By identifying these challenges, the report serves as a crucial resource for stakeholders aiming to facilitate change in the entrepreneurial landscape.

The emphasis on mentorship and knowledge-sharing platforms is designed to provide women with the necessary tools and networks to navigate the funding landscape effectively. Additionally, government support is vital in creating policies that foster inclusivity and promote gender equity in entrepreneurship.

The report’s insights are particularly timely as Indonesia continues to strive for economic growth while addressing gender disparities within its business sectors. The glaring funding gap underscores the urgent need for concerted action from both public and private sectors to ensure women entrepreneurs can thrive.
