Carson,United States – March 15, 2022 —
In an effort to stem the tide of homelessness in Los Angeles and the surrounding communities, longtime advocate and businesswoman Katina Holliday has launched the Shine Ambassador Program, where some of society’s most vulnerable are trained and prepared for jobs in the food service, landscape maintenance, screen printing and customer service fields. The three-month program is designed so that enrollees are able to build their resumes in preparation for future employment.
Miss Holliday, CEO and founder of Holliday’s Helping Hands (HHH), that serves and provides interim housing for the homeless in LA County facilities, says jobs training programs are necessary if society intends to address homelessness in our communities. According to the National Alliance to End Homelessness, as of 2017 an estimated 553,742 people in the United States were experiencing homelessness on any given night. Today’s figures are thought by many to be much higher due to the impact of COVID-19.
“In cities big and small all over the U.S., the problem of homelessness is spreading like wildfire. Tents are being erected under freeways, on sidewalks, in parks and even now the sidewalks of neighborhoods and there doesn’t seem to be an end in sight,” says Miss Holliday, a prominent African American entrepreneur whose nursing background and Masters Degree set the foundation for her eponymous company. “We’re excited to launch the Shine Ambassador Program, which we believe will help restore the dignity and pride that our clients are so dearly in need of.”
Miss Holliday traces her familiarity and fondness for the homeless to her childhood in Aberdeen, Mississippi. Her grandmother was a powerful and inspiring guiding force in her life and it was she who provided constant care of the town’s most vulnerable soul whose name was Shine.
“I have clear recollections of my grandmother caring for Shine by taking care of his most basic needs including three meals a day and other essentials,” recalls Miss Holliday. “Later, when I was working alongside the homeless population of Los Angeles, I couldn’t help but recall her kindness when caring for Shine. And it was that basis that provided the inspiration for Holliday’s Helping Hands and now, the Shine Ambassador Program.”
In addition to providing temporary housing for the homeless, HHH’s Shine Ambassador Program requires that enrollees adhere to a strict job training regimen. For instance, one of the programs requires them to earn their food handlers license, shadow chefs and work in kitchens in preparation for a restaurant career. There is also a property maintenance program for those who desire to work outdoors as well as opportunities in the screen printing and customer service fields. Graduates are awarded certificates of completion that serve as a source of pride.
