Nvidia unveils Project GR00T, a versatile AI designed to drive the humanoid robots of tomorrow.

In a groundbreaking announcement at the GTC conference held at the San Jose McEnery Convention Center, Nvidia has introduced Project GR00T, a cutting-edge multimodal AI initiative set to revolutionize the future of humanoid robotics. This ambitious project utilizes a general-purpose foundation model, allowing humanoid robots to process and act upon a variety of inputs including text, speech, videos, and live demonstrations. Developed with the support of Nvidia’s Isaac Robotic Platform tools, particularly the new Isaac Lab for reinforcement learning, Project GR00T represents a significant step forward in artificial intelligence.

Nvidia CEO, Jensen Huang, emphasized the significance of building foundation models for humanoid robots as one of today’s most thrilling challenges in AI. He stated, “The enabling technologies are coming together for leading roboticists around the world to take giant leaps toward artificial general robotics.” To facilitate the success of GR00T in enterprises, Nvidia has also introduced a dedicated Jetson Thor chip, specifically designed for humanoids, alongside advancements for AI-powered industrial manipulation arms and robots designed for navigating unstructured environments.

Project GR00T stands for Generalist Robot 00 Technology and aims to empower humanoid robots with the ability to understand and process natural language, speech, video, and live demonstrations. This capability is expected to significantly enhance humanoid robots’ coordination, dexterity, and general action-taking abilities, making them more adaptable and interactive in real-world scenarios. The initiative simplifies the development and deployment process, allowing programming through simple text and demonstrations.

During his keynote at GTC, Huang showcased various GR00T-powered humanoid robots completing diverse tasks, highlighting the project’s potential in leveraging generative AI and transformers. Notably, Nvidia’s project has garnered attention from prominent players in the AI space, including OpenAI, which has invested in embodied AI through startups like 1X Technologies and Figure.

Deepu Talla, offering insights to journalists, indicated that while specific details on the internal architecture remain under wraps, Nvidia is keen on expanding the model’s availability to a broader range of developers soon. Additionally, the introduction of the Jetson Thor computing platform marks a significant enhancement in performance capabilities for humanoid robotics, boasting an 8-fold improvement in GPU performance over its predecessor.

Nvidia’s Isaac Robotics Platform plays a central role in bringing Project GR00T to life, offering developers an end-to-end solution for AI-powered robot development, simulation, and deployment. The platform’s latest additions, Isaac Manipulator and Isaac Perceptor, are tailored to enhance robotic arms and enable autonomous navigation in complex environments, respectively.

With these advancements, Nvidia not only aims to redefine the landscape of humanoid robotics but also facilitates a new era of automation and AI application in various industries. As Project GR00T moves forward in its early access phase, with broader public release details yet to be announced, the tech world eagerly anticipates the future milestones this initiative will achieve.
