MindStir Media’s remote working and sales plan serves as an example of how other small businesses can adapt during this pandemic and focus more on operating virtually.

Small businesses throughout the country, particularly those that depend on brick-and-mortar working environments and sales, have been shaken to the core. Many large companies and corporations have shifted to remote working and sales but for small businesses this task can seem daunting and almost impossible. Enter MindStir Media, a small business founded and operated by bestselling author J.J. Hebert. MindStir is a top-ranked self-publishing company and it runs nearly 100% remotely.

“We allow our workers to work from home,” says J.J. Hebert. “We have editors, designers, illustrators, and PR professionals and all their work can be rendered online without the need for everyone to work in the same office space.” Hebert acknowledges that the biggest challenge for working remotely is trying to ensure everyone on a given project is able to communicate with one another. “That’s why we have online systems in place such as project and client management systems… Every professional on each project can connect with each other in real-time to achieve the same goal and having client info in the cloud allows every team member to access the same client information as needed.”

As for the sales process, Hebert explains that companies can connect with potential clients through methods outside of in-person meetings. “We offer an incredibly informative website and through it potential clients can schedule phone consultations, receive email support, and even arrange video conference calls upon request,” Hebert adds. “There’s no need to meet up in person these days. Just make sure you use a scheduling tool to let people schedule consultations and sales and support calls with you in advance. They should also receive reminders.”

But how should a business handle contracts and paperwork during a pandemic? Hebert recommends using a digital document management service. “The real estate industry, as an example, has been using digital document signing for years to finalize deals. Your company can likely do the same. And the best part is that social distancing remains intact and it’s easier for the client and company to complete a deal this way.”

Hebert admits that these strategies won’t work in every industry. “Restaurants won’t really be able to adopt many of the strategies. Most of the remote strategies we use are ideal for service-based businesses, but product-based businesses can also implement some of the strategies in their own way. For instance, a local clothing store could improve their website and use online client management systems to keep track of their customer info. They could also use scheduling tools on their website to offer support and sales calls — or even live chat — to answer questions about their products and help close sales.”
